Bedroom design and layout tips

There are many people who enjoy Restoring old Furniture for there bedrooms. We have put together tips and pointers on how to go about restoring furniture.

Stripping, Sanding and Finnishing Furniture

When it comes to stripping furniture, patience has a big role to play here. It can be both frustrating, and relaxing, and it can also be boring at times, depending on what you are stipping. There are a few items you are going to need to get together before you start stripping:

  • Stripper
  • Gloves
  • Eye Protection
  • Cleaner

It is a good Idea to let the stripper do the work for you, after all thats what it's there for. It may be necessary to put a few coats of stripper on to get the old coat off, and if you are getting frustrated because the old coat is coming off, then you are probably not letting the Stripper do the work.

Use a comercial after stripping cleaner, and let the piece of furniture dry over night before using 0000 steel wool to remove the final flecks of wax and make sure that all the old finnish has been completely removed.

When it comes to sanding furniture, you need to be very carefull about it. Many times sanding can actually do more damage to the piece than good. If you are going to sand a piece, do it wby hand, not with a sanding machine. Always sand with the grain, because if you go accross the grain, it will show up when you do any staining. Ensure that you remove all the dust from the piece, and this is best done with a tack cloth. Any dust left behind will show up when you put a cleaar finnish on.

When it comes to finnishing the piece, you have many options which are open to you. If you are going to stain the piece, it is better to stain before you seal, many people believe it should be the other way around. Be sure to use a sanding sealer that is compatible with your stainer.

There is a wide variety of finnishes that are available on the market, some are hard, some soft, and some will give the piece more protection than others. You will need to decide on what finnish you are looking for

NB. Always wear gloves when using Paint Stripper, and never sand old painted finnishes.

If you are pregnant or have heart/lung problems avoid being around refinnishing chemicals. Always follow the safety precautions on the container of any chemicals you are using.
